During the past month. I have been working for a client who wants a model. I posted an ad for submissions in various online and print mediums.

The response I got was frightening. Lot's of people were submitting, but the quality of  what people were sending  was terrible. Hence I am inspired to post this set of guidelines.

1. You need to submit a photo.

If you are interested in a modeling job. You are being selected for how you look. That means you have to submit a photo of yourself . No photo. No reply. This part should be simple enough, but you would be surprised at how many one line email I received just saying that they wanted the job without and attachments or links.

2. Better than nothing?

I look at everything that comes in, but most clients will not. You simply can NOT send a photo that you have taken with your camera phone. Nor is it likely that your boyfriend or uncle Phil  has a clue of what the industry standards are to shoot a head shot / body shot. Your job as a model is to put a clients product or service in the best light possible. I don't believe that you can do that if you don't send a decent few photos. You can get photo's shot for as little as $75.00 a session. Make the investment  and take the time. Otherwise get out of the business. Your just wasting your time and the clients if you don't send something polished.

3. Talk to the potential client.

Sending an email for a modeling position is a job interview. If you send a one line note. I'm not going to hire you. You should introduce yourself and send some killer photos. Always include SOME contact information. I can't hire you if I can't get in touch with you.

4. Follow up.

If you want it. Get it. If you don't get it. It's better that they remember your passion and tenacity. They may use you for another job. So just make sure that they keep you in mind.

and that's a wrap. almost anyone can apply for a modeling job, but the people who take the time to do it right are the ones who can make a career doing it.
